As the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland

About Me

I am a multi-disciplinary theatre artist specializing in mask work and puppetry. I work as an actor, designer, director, and teacher. If you'd like to commission an original mask or mask set, please contact me at tony_fuemmeler @ yahoo.com. Also check my workshops and performances pages for the latest opportunities to take a class or see my work in action.

What's New?

The BIG news: Alice in Wonderland by Nomadic Theatre Co. I am the newest member of Nomadic, and we are performing a new adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic. All of the characters except Alice are performed in mask (I play the Mad Hatter and the Caterpillar), and the play is full witty wordplay and physical comedy! This show opened June 4 and runs for four weekends at the IFCC in North Portland. For more info, click here! Photos of masks will be up soon

I recently completed masks for a production of Into the Woods in Portland and produced some Film Noir-inspired masks for an original solo performance in Kansas City. Check out my Masks pages for some photos. I have also been coordinating the efforts of Puppet Lab PDX, a development progam for new works in puppetry in collaboration with Tears of Joy Theatre.

My other company, Simple Machines Theatre, recently debuted our experimental shadow puppet show called bugged. in the Fertile Ground Festival. We had an amazing turnout! Look for it in festivals this fall.

A Little History

My interest in masks began in undergraduate study with Ècole Jacques Lecoq graduates Ron and Ludvika Popenhagen at the University of Kansas and continued forward into training with Bruce Marrs and Joan Schirle at the Dell'Arte International School.

I have worked in Minneapolis with In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre and BareBones Artist Collective; in New York City with Under the Table Ensemble Theatre, Peculiar Works Project, Theatre Et Al, Ten Directions, and puppeteers Erin Orr, Kate Brehm, Max Dana, and Lake Simons; in Los Angeles with André du Lorde's Grand Guignolers de Paris; and in Portland with Nomadic Theatre Co, Oregon Children's Theatre, Tears of Joy, and Insight Out Theatre Collective.

I have taught puppetry, mask-making and performance to all ages of students in workshops and residencies across the country and I have created masks for clients near and far since 2003. I have exhibited masks in

  • FACADES: A Mask Invitational at The Doll Gardner Gallery in Portland, OR (2010)

  • MASKIBITION 25 at Ink People in Eureka, CA (2009)

  • Under the Influence in the Ashby Hodge Gallery at Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO (200)

  • Face the Nation IV Juried Mask Exhibition at UC Davis (2006)

There have been many wonderful individuals and companies with whom I have collaborated over the years. Look here for more information about them.
